ABOUT DIA DE MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD)
The "Day of the Dead" / "Dia de Muertos" is one of the most respected holidays in many Latin American Countries. The event is held regard in Mexico, where the dead are remembered and honored. It is a time of happiness and great celebration.
The custom of honoring the dead is pre-Columbian and originated as a harvest celebration in the month of September or October. The first crops of the fall harvest, such as the first beans, corn, and squash, were not eaten; instead, they were prepared as an offering to Tonantzin, our Mother Earth. The offering was prepared to give thanks for the gifts she had given us. The celebration was also a time to share offerings of food and drink with our ancestors, who came to visit from the underworld. The arrival of Catholicism after the Conquest brought about several changes in the indigenous traditions, including the date of the celebration with the introduction of "All Saints Day" & "All Souls' Day". Since that time, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated on the first two days of November.
WITH THE "DIA DE MUERTOS" - "DAY OF THE DEAD" TRADITION IN MIND, THE FEATURED ARTISTS FROM THE NORTHEAST OHIO COMMUNITY HAVE COME TOGETHER TO SHARE THEIR ARTISTIC VISIONS OF AN "OFRENDA" (ALTAR). EACH OFRENDA REFLECTS THE ARTIST'S PERSONAL BELIEFS AND INTERPRETATION OF A TRADITIONAL OFFERINGS IN HONOR OF HIS OR HER DEPARTED LOVED ONES.
